The Castes For our vineyard, we have chosen only Portuguese castes native to the Vinho Verde region.
AlvarinhoAlvarinho caste is an ancient grape variety native to the Vinho Verde region with low productivity levels of high quality grapes. Alvarinho grapes are used to produce excellent single-caste wines, but can also be successfully combined with Trajadura or Loureiro. This caste produces pale yellow colored wines, very aromatic, with high alcohol levels and well-balanced acidity. ArintoArinto caste is one of the oldest Portuguese native castes, grown in all of the Portuguese wine regions due to its versatility. It is a high yield caste and its grapes produce a fresh pale yellow colored wine, with a discreet aromatic profile, that can develop well in bottle, to an elegant and complex wine. The Arinto caste can be used by itself to produce single-caste wines or combined with any of the other white Vinho Verde castes, also producing high quality wines. AzalAzal caste is a Portuguese native caste of the Vinho Verde region, with good levels of productivity that produces its best quality grapes in the Vinho Verde region. Azal caste grapes produce wines that are light and fresh, with good acidity levels, which make it also excellent to blend. LoureiroLoureiro caste is an ancient Portuguese native caste of the Vinho Verde region. It is a good productive grape variety, producing high quality grapes and wines. The Loureiro caste wines are light citrus colored wines with high levels of acidity and very aromatic. Its grapes can be used to produce single-caste wines, but have been traditionally combined with Alvarinho, Arinto or Trajadura castes to produce great quality wines. TrajaduraTrajadura is a Vinho Verde native caste of the north of Portugal, namely the Minho region. Trajadura caste is a productive caste, producing golden yellow colored wines with a delicate aroma. Its grapes produce a moderate acidity wine with a good alcohol balance and is, because of that, typically used mixed with other castes to “smooth” the final Vinho Verde wine. VinhãoVinhão caste grapes are singular in their bluish black color, producing black colored wines, dark and opaque, almost impenetrable to the light. Vinhão caste is often used in combination with other red wine castes due to its colouring-ability, such as Port wine, in the Douro Region. When used by itself, Vinhão caste produces rustic dark colored wines with a strong sweet aroma, slightly astringent, with high acidity levels, contributing to its final rusticity. |
